What is a Birth Doula?

In Greek, the word doula means 'servant of a woman', she was given the task of caring for the birthing mother, History is full of women serving and nurturing mothers during the birth of their children with compassion, knowledge and trust.

Today a Birth Doula is a trained professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to a mother and her partner before, during and shortly after childbirth to help her achieve the birth experience that is the healthiest, most satisfying possible.

What does a Doula do?

As a Birth Doula, Johnann will nurture, support and offer guidance for the birthing mother and partner during their pregnancy, birth and the early postpartum time. She comes to a birth equipped with a bag of tricks, knowledge of comfort measures and to assist the mother in making sure that she has a positive and empowering birth story.

During pregnancy, a relationship of trust between the mother, partner and doula develops in which the soon to be parents feels free to ask questions, express their fears and concerns, and take an active role in creating and ensuring a positive birth intention. Johnann is the mother's advocate and cheerleader, supporting birthing "goals" whether it's a medication free birth, a cesarean or anywhere in-between.

As doula she also encourages and facilitates participation from the partner and offer real ways to better support the mother. Johnann also encourages a trusted and positive role with care providers. After the birth, she will spend time helping to encourage bonding between mother, partner, the new baby and other family members.
